If you haven't already done so have a look at the great new e-zine published by a fine group of talented artists. This long awaited first issue is of a very high standard and packed with inspirational ideas. I haven't finished reading the first issue and I'm already looking forward to Issue 2! You asked on my blog about the collagraphs. With all printmaking there are hundreds of variations on how you can approach a technique, from the way you make the plate, the way you apply/remove ink, the printing surface you use, the amount of pressure applied... one of the joys of printmaking is that you never quite know what you're going to end up with.
The way I do collagraphs is quite different from how you've described your process - too long to go into in comments - but that just proves my point that there are a million ways to do it.
One thing though. I would always recommend sealing your plate at least with PVA, and preferably with shellac too. That way your ink/paint doesn't sink into the plate and you get a cleaner print. If you seal the back as well it also means you can wash it if you want to start a new colour.
